Arun Angels have been patrolling the streets of Bognor Regis since December 2009. Our Street Angels are volunteers who believe that people deserve care and love in their time of need. We work in Bognor Regis town centre and the seafront area around pubs and clubs to provide support and care to people who may be distressed or vulnerable.
Since starting, there have been nearly 40 volunteers involved in patrols from 12 different local churches.
The aim is to watch out for those who have become vulnerable and to offer help and support. Typically this would include those who are distressed, affected by alcohol, violence or the fear of violence. There are times when listening to someone’s story or simply being there brings a sense of calm and well-being to a person.
As a group of Christians in Bognor Regis and surrounding areas, our faith calls us to show the generosity and mercy that Jesus Christ modelled for us. These values include treating people with respect, not being judgemental, being professional and collaborating with others.
We work closely with local agencies such as the police, local authority, licensees and town centre businesses.
We are mostly known for handing out water and flip flops. We hand out flip-flops to girls whose shoe style has eclipsed comfort, water to anyone who is dehydrated, as well as space blankets and rain ponchos to people who made the wrong choice of clothes or are stranded in bad weather.
However we often find that it is just kindness, reassurance and someone to listen that is all that is needed.
“People we meet really appreciate this work and we frequently hear vocal encouragement from people on the streets saying “respect”, “good on you” or “we love you, Arun Angels!”
